Food Safety News tests found out last year the three quarters of the store honey does not contain pollen. The removal of pollen makes it tough for the origin of the filtered honey to be proven. The National Honey Board says that it is not against regulations to filter the honey and that the pollen gets removed as part of the process to remove other bee part particles. The concern stems from findings of a third of fake honey, imported form Asia, having shown contamination from lead and antibiotics.
A suggestion to keep you purchasing safe honey is to buy local honey or from companies that you know the origin of the sweet sticky delight. Buying local not only gives you the peace of mind knowing where it comes from, but it will also help support the local businesses, it is smart money practice.
