When it comes to saving money, being frugal can come in handy. Frugality does not mean you have to go without, but more like being smarter with the everyday choices you make.
My shopping bill always goes up when it is time to replenish the household cleaners. What I would normally spend at the store increases by $20 easily, if not more, because of these items. There are less expensive ways to keep your home areas clean. You can make your own cleaners in reusable dispensers. Your initial expense to purchase the ingredients and containers will be extra, but the length of time they will be used, will bring the cost down to pennies. Some of the items are ones that you probably all ready have which will lessen the start up price. Items that you might all ready have on hand are: salt, baking soda, vinegar, lemon juice, (your lemon juice can be from a bottle as long as it is 100% with no oils).
Let’s start in the oven! Oven cleaners have such a strong odor from all the chemical ingredients. It cleans your oven, but also leaves a lingering odor which can irritate sensitive lungs. Combine three quarters of a cup of baking soda, one quarter cup of each salt and water. This will create a thick paste to be spread throughout the inside of your oven. You will want to use this paste on ovens that are not super dirty, those may take some extra attempts or additional cleaners. At pennies a cleaning, you can maintain your oven without adding the toxic fumes to your kitchen area.
Save on dishwasher rinse agents. I go through this often and the price is not budget friendly. Vinegar is a wonderful cleaning agent. It is inexpensive and free of toxins. Vinegar can be used to clean your dishwasher if odors are building up, but it can also be used as a regular rinse agent. Let the dispenser run out of rinse agent, fill the dispenser up with vinegar and let it run. Repeat when it runs out. Vinegar will prevent water spots on cups and glasses, promote cleaner and dryer dishes, contains no harsh chemicals and promotes an overall cleaner dishwasher. If you want a homemade dishwasher detergent you can use a tablespoon of Borax and one tablespoon of baking soda. You will have your dishwasher running cleaner and much more inexpensively.
All purpose cleaning spray is easy to make. You can use this recipe for counter-tops, sinks, toilets, and to touch up spots on floors. When you mix one part white vinegar and one part water into a reusable spray bottle, you have a great all-purpose cleaner. If you have tough soap scum to clean, warm the cleaner before spraying onto the area and let it sit for a bit before scrubbing. You can add 100% lemon juice to help cover the vinegar smell, but once vinegar is dry, the odor will go away. If you have marble counters, you will not want to use vinegar.
To clean mirrors or glass, use a solution of two teaspoons vinegar and one quart of water. Old newspaper wipes the glass and keeps lint away.
Make a bath tub and sink scrub. Make a paste out of baking soda, a splash of lemon juice and a little bit of biodegradable dish soap. Your finished paste will have the consistency of frosting and can be easily transferred to a towel to scrub and rinse. If you have stubborn grime, let the paste sit 10-15 minutes before rinsing.
Clean your floor with a homemade detergent. Use more of that biodegradable dish soap, one quarter cup to one half cup of either white vinegar or lemon juice to two gallons of water. Combine in the sink or in a bucket and use with your mop. This mixture can be used on any floor unless the manufacturer warns against all detergents.
Cut out the costs of household cleaners and utilize these more natural non toxic ways to keep your home clean and money in your account. These are just a few of many of the natural ways to keep your budget from being over worked buying expensive cleaners.
