Plant a garden. Start a compost pile.

We’ve been just thinking about it for 3 years. Just thinking about it. We wanted a garden. We wanted a compost pile. We had the place for them. My kids were collecting seeds for the garden. 3 years!

This year we did it! My family was out in the backyard, doing it, planting that garden AND composting! It took one trip to Home Depot to get the tiny vegetable plants and the soil or manure or whatever. The plants were maybe $2 each. It was that easy.

5 weeks later, we’ve reaped (no lie!) 12 crookneck squash, 10 cucumbers, 4 acorn squash, 2 big bags of cherry tomatoes, 3 zucchini and we’re watching & waiting for eggplant, 5 different kinds of pepper, green beans, watermelon and cantalope. We have so much vegetables that we are able to share with family and friends. Every time we go to the market, we look at the prices of these vegetables and are amazed at how much we’re saving. PLUS our veggies are fresh and we don’t use pesticides. People pay big bucks for organic vegetable and fruit.

At the same time, we decided to start a compost pile. After some research and asking friends that have been composting for years, we did it too. Here’s a site for more information, ehow.com/how_3541_begin-compost-pile.html This website informs you how to do almost anything. I love it because I feel like we’re using everything and not having much trash. We’ve been putting eggshells, coffee grounds, peelings from the home grown veggies and fruit, almost everything that’s leftover when we cook.

It’s been a wonderful, bonding family experience. We already have plans for next year’s garden, promised to be bigger and better. You should try it!
