I try to clean out my boys’ toy box every year, right before Christmas. I’m thankful that the boys have a little cousin that’s 3 years younger so we can hand the outgrown toys down to him, even more thankful that his mom totally appreciates and uses their old toys (and clothes). Can you imagine how many old toys end up in the landfill? MILLIONS! I read some statistics that only a third of these old toys actually get recycled. Before you just dump out the old toys, really think about what you can do to recycle them. Here’s some ways that I can think of.
- Hand them down to a younger sibling, cousin or friend. Cleaning them up can do wonders and make them look like brand new.
- Donate them to the Salvation Army
- Donate them to a Children’s Hospital or orphanage
- Donate them to local school or charity
- Sell them on ebay
- Sell or donate them on Craig’s List
- Sell them at a garage sale and make a little money
- Take them apart and do a craft with the pieces
I found a good little site where you can post some unwanted, used toys or games (it’s free) and you can even send requests for old toys you may be looking for. recycle.net. Also check out what this company is doing. Pretty creative, huh?? So before you just dump a bunch of toys out, take a little effort and recycle!
